Osteria Angelina Restaurant London Review: Italian-Japanese Fusion

Osteria Angelina restaurant in London, the latest venture from the acclaimed team behind Dalston’s Angelina, will significantly impact the city’s dining scene when it opens in May 2025. This new establishment brings a unique blend of Italian and Japanese culinary traditions to the Norton Folgate area, between Spitalfields, Shoreditch, and the City.

Founded by Joshua Owens-Baigler, Amar Takhar, and Laura Horta, the original Angelina in Dalston garnered critical acclaim for its tasting menus that fused Italian and Japanese cuisines. Building on this success, the team envisioned Osteria Angelina as a more expansive and accessible venue. It focuses on handmade ‘wafu’ pasta and dishes from a Binchotan-fired grill.

Housed in a restored Victorian warehouse, Osteria Angelina retains the building’s original features. It includes soaring four-meter-high ceilings, contributing to an airy atmosphere. The 75-cover ground floor centers around a large open kitchen and bar, offering chef counter and table seating. A glass-walled section showcases the art of pasta-making, allowing diners to observe the pastaio at work. The monochromatic interior design, curated by Anna Owens Designs, balances comfort with understated elegance. It features tableware and furniture that enhance the dining experience. For private events, a lower ground floor dining room accommodates up to 18 guests. It provides an intimate setting for special occasions.

Osteria Angelina Restaurant London Menu

Osteria Angelina is dedicated to crafting fresh pasta infused with Japanese influences. The menu boasts eight regularly rotating pasta dishes highlighting seasonal ingredients and innovative techniques. The Binchotan grill offers substantial cuts of meat and seafood, prepared for sharing. A signature offering is the Gran Bollito Misto. This traditional Italian boiled meat dish is presented tableside from a classic Bollito Misto trolley. Additionally, the restaurant features an extensive selection of over 300 Italian wines, a curated sake list by London sake expert Masayo Nuttall, and a diverse range of grappa and Japanese whiskies.

The antipasti selection includes crudi and fritti dishes, such as delicate sashimi-grade fish dressed in citrus and olive oil, and crisp arancini infused with Japanese seasonings. Pasta enthusiasts can indulge in creations like squid ink tagliolini with yuzu and bottarga, or pappardelle with miso-braised short rib ragu. From the Binchotan grill, options feature whole grilled sea bass with shiso salsa verde, and ribeye steak accompanied by wasabi chimichurri. The Gran Bollito Misto, served tableside, offers a selection of tender meats to perfection. Desserts continue the theme, with offerings like matcha tiramisu and yuzu panna cotta providing a sweet conclusion to the meal.
