The Grill at The Hero Restaurant London Review: Elevated Pub Dining in Maida Vale

In October 2024, a historic pub, unveiled its latest venture: The Grill at The Hero restaurant in London. Situated on the first floor above the main pub, The Grill offers a refined dining experience that complements the casual atmosphere downstairs. This new addition is the brainchild of the team behind The Pelican and The Bull. They are known for their successful revamps of traditional British pubs.

Upon ascending to the first floor, the space features high ceilings, wooden wall panels, and large leather banquettes, creating an ambience reminiscent of a 17th-century inn. Crumbling plaster ceilings and creaking wooden floorboards add to the room’s character, while candlelit tables provide diners with a warm and intimate setting.

The Grill at The Hero successfully elevates the traditional pub dining experience, offering well-executed dishes in a charming and atmospheric setting.

The Grill at The Hero Restaurant London Menu

The menu at The Grill focuses on speciality cuts of meat and fresh fish, all expertly prepared over an open fire. Starters include mixed wild mushrooms with cured egg yolk, offering a simple yet flavorful introduction to the meal. The beef tartare served atop a crisp golden hash brown is a standout dish. It combines tender raw beef with a satisfying crunch. Another unique offering is the sweetbreads in lobster gravy. This seemingly unconventional pairing works harmoniously, especially when enjoyed with the freshly baked bread rolls provided.

For main courses, the leg of lamb accompanied by peas and charred greens provides a hearty and comforting option. Side dishes such as French fries, cucumbers with dill, and carrots complement the mains perfectly. The menu also features a celeriac and truffle pie, reminiscent of the cheese and onion pie served in the pub downstairs, offering a rich and indulgent vegetarian option.

Desserts continue the theme of classic comfort food with a twist. The apple and blackberry crumble served with fresh vanilla ice cream provides a sweet and satisfying end to the meal. The wine list features classic selections and intriguing options like the Col Fondo Italian fizz and a silky smooth English pinot noir from The Althorne Estate in Essex.
